A Brief History Of Tenby

Tenby has miles of sandy beaches and plenty of shops. There are three beaches at Tenby - North, South and Town - so you can always find a beach to relax on, that is sheltered from the wind.

This popular tourist destination is a historic walled town built in the 13th century . For those interested in history, you do not have to look far. The castle and museum are a great place to start, offering an intriguing insight into the events and foundations of this picturesque town.

The town walls have been rebuilt and strengthened many times since the destruction of Tenby in 1260. Follow the history from the Norman Conquest, through the First Civil War, the Plague, through the Victorian Age when Tenby was believed to be a health-giving location, right up to the present day with this guide to Tenby.

The Ghost of St Mary's

There have been reports that on some nights a ghostly figure dressed in a cowled robe paces quickly along the central aisle of the church and then fade away. It is not known who this person is, but beneath the church there is a network of tunnels that lead to various part of the town.

Other reported supernatural happenings include unexplained movement of furniture in the church and moaning noises. Sceptics have attributed these phenomena to wooden floors expanding with moisture from the air causing displacement of objects and creaking noises. But who knows?!

Perhaps one way to find out would be to take The Ghost Walk of Tenby led by Marion Davies, exploring the history and legend of the town. Marion also provides guiding services for other areas around South and West Wales.
